Learn About Smyrna

Historic Smyrna, GA was settled by in 1832. By the late 1830s, the area was well known throughout the state for the popular religious destination, Smyrna Camp Ground. The area grew after the completion of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1842 and went through several name changes before landing on the Greek Biblical reference, Smyrna. On July 4, 1864 two Civil War battles occurred in the area. Businesses, homes and our 1849 covered bridge (since rebuilt and still in use) were burned by Sherman's troops. During WWII the nearby Bell Bomber plant produced B-29 bombers, then in 1951 Lockheed reopened the plant bringing the city new jobs and growth.
